Want to know more about our Caribbean travel insurance?

These FAQs are here to help you understand what travel insurance to the Caribbean includes — from our coverage to how each plan works for your trip.

Not quite — Mexico and the Caribbean are considered separate destinations when it comes to travel insurance. The good news? We’ve got coverage for both. Just enter your destination when you get a quote online, and we’ll help you find the right plan for your trip.

Our travel insurance can provide coverage for many Caribbean countries. But if you're thinking about getting coverage for a trip to Cuba, you'll need to get our approval first. You can call our award-winning customer service team at 1-800-228-9792 to speak with us about your trip to Cuba.

Please note: We can't provide coverage for any Caribbean country that's been sanctioned by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC). So, before you plan your trip to the Caribbean, it's a good idea to check the OFAC website to see if there are any sanctions against the country you're planning to visit.

When planning a journey to the Caribbean, it's crucial to keep an eye on the U.S. Department of State's travel advisories website for any travel warnings.

Travel advisories that can impact your Travelex travel insurance policy may be listed on our travel alerts page. If you have a policy with Travelex, you also get access to our Travel On app, which can provide real-time security alerts while you're traveling in the Caribbean.

No matter how laid-back your itinerary is on your all-inclusive vacation, it’s still wise to consider travel insurance for your Caribbean trip. Travel insurance isn't just about protecting against unexpected illnesses or injuries when you're on a trip: It can also offer protection for unexpected situations like travel delays and lost baggage

Just like with any trip, anything can happen while you’re on a Caribbean cruise. If a situation arises — like a canceled cruise because of a named storm in Bermuda or a fall on the stairs heading to the pool deck — cruise travel insurance can help protect your finances by reimbursing costs you didn’t expect, including unused non-refundable payments for eligible reasons. Travel insurance can also provide necessary support even if you start your cruise in the United States.

If you want the flexible transportation that a rental car provides, we can help. Our travel insurance for Caribbean trips can assist with unforeseen costs associated with rental car damage, including collision and vandalism.

Whether you choose our Ultimate, Advantage, Essential, or Travel Med Go plan, you can include our rental car damage upgrade for up to $50,000 coverage with a $100 deductible.

Please note: Our rental car damage upgrade is not available in Jamaica.

If you’re planning to go scuba diving in St. Lucia or deep-sea fishing in Jamaica, your travel insurance plan should help protect all the adventures on your itinerary while you’re in the Caribbean.

From horseback riding and hiking to kayaking and snorkeling, you can get important protection for some activities with our base plans.

However, if you’re looking to take part in more thrilling activities like scuba diving deeper than 75 feet or bungee jumping, you may want to consider our adventure activities upgrade, which can be added to our Ultimate, Advantage, Essential, and Travel Med Go plans.

If you have more questions or want to see if the adventure activities you have in mind are eligible for coverage by your travel insurance plan before buying, contact our customer service team at 1-800-228-9792.

A trip can be a big investment, and it can be stressful if something unexpected comes up and you need to cancel your vacation.

Our base plans with trip cancellation coverage can reimburse you for certain eligible reasons. But for more flexibility ahead of your Caribbean vacation, it might be smart to add our cancel for any reason upgrade* to our Ultimate travel insurance plan.

This upgrade means you can call off your trip for whatever reason you like, as long as it's at least 48 hours before you're supposed to leave. This way, you won't lose all your vacation spendings if something comes up, because we can give you back 75% of the cost of your insured trip (up to a maximum of $7,500).

If you want to get your Caribbean trip investment back with this upgrade, all the following must apply:

  • You insured all non-refundable trip expenses (up to $10,000) when you first bought your policy.
  • You purchased your policy at least 31 days before your departure date.
  • You added the cancel for any reason upgrade when you first bought your policy and within 21 days of your first payment for the trip.

*Subsequent arrangements must be insured within 14 days of booking those arrangements. Cancel for any fortuitous reason for NY residents.

It’s very common for travelers to visit multiple Caribbean countries on one trip, particularly while on a cruise. When getting a Travelex quote, label your destination as the Caribbean. This will mean your whole trip will be eligible for coverage unless you visit a sanctioned or blocked destination that we don’t include in coverage.

If you’re only visiting one country in the Caribbean, such as the Dominican Republic or Curacao, you can enter that specific country as your destination. If you’re visiting Mexico and the Caribbean on your trip, enter your destination as the place you’ll be spending the most time on your trip.

Visiting Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands? All our plans can provide coverage for these destinations. To learn more about our plans and the coverage they offer, compare our plans now

A lot of credit cards come with travel insurance, but these plans might not offer comprehensive benefits and usually have certain rules you need to follow to use them.

If you want more thorough protection, you should think about getting travel insurance from a specialist like Travelex. When you purchase a policy directly from a travel insurance provider, you may also have coverage for pre-existing medical conditions and other important benefits, which can help you feel safer when you travel.

It's a good idea — and here’s why. Most U.S. health insurance plans, including Medicare, don’t cover medical care outside the U.S. That means if you need treatment in the Caribbean, you could be responsible for the full cost.

Travel insurance helps fill that gap with emergency medical coverage, evacuation support, and 24/7 assistance — so you have someone to call if the unexpected happens while you’re away.

Hurricane season in the Caribbean typically runs from June through November, and storms can impact flights, accommodations, and cruise itineraries.

To help protect your trip, consider purchasing travel insurance early — before a storm is named — so you’re eligible for benefits like trip cancellation, interruption, or delay coverage because of severe weather. These are all benefits of our Ultimate, Advantage, and Essential plans.

You’ll also want to keep an eye on local forecasts and stay flexible with your plans. Travel insurance for the Caribbean won’t prevent the weather, but it can help you recover costs if it throws your trip off course.

You may still be eligible for coverage. With our Ultimate plan, you can qualify for a pre-existing condition exclusion waiver as long as you:

  • Purchase your plan within 21 days of your first trip payment.
  • Insure any subsequent travel arrangements within 21 days of their purchase.
  • Are medically able to travel when you buy the plan

That way, if you’re managing a condition like asthma, diabetes, or high blood pressure, you can still get protection while enjoying your time in the Caribbean.

It depends. If you miss your cruise departure because of a covered reason — like a flight delay, bad weather, or an accident on the way to the port — your plan may help reimburse additional costs under trip interruption benefits

Be sure to review the Description of Coverage (DoC) for your selected plan to see what’s included and what qualifies as a covered event. Not all disruptions are eligible, so purchasing your plan early and understanding the details is key.

It depends on a few factors — like your trip length, total cost, traveler ages, and the type of coverage you choose.

If you’re looking for cheap travel insurance to the Caribbean, our Travel Med Go plan is often a great fit for last-minute or budget-conscious travelers. But if you’re after our best travel insurance for Caribbean cruises, our Ultimate plan offers broader protection — including trip cancellation and more upgrade options. Of course, it’s a bit more expensive.
