Want to know more about our travel insurance for France?

From medical care to trip changes, here’s how our coverage works in France and how we help care for you.

Travel insurance for France is recommended for all U.S. travelers, but it’s not required for short-term visits if you’re a U.S. passport holder. You can enter France — and other countries in the Schengen Area — without proof of insurance as long as you’re staying fewer than 90 days for tourism or business.

However, if you’re applying for a Schengen visa (required for non-U.S. citizens from certain countries), you must show proof of travel medical insurance. The Schengen rules require a minimum of €30,000 in coverage for medical emergencies and medical evacuation across all member countries.

Even if you’re not required to show insurance at entry, unexpected costs in France — like hospital visits, rail disruptions, or lost luggage — can be expensive. Having travel insurance from the USA to France can help protect both your trip investment and your finances abroad.

France isn’t just about romance: Travelers with an adventurous spirit can find exciting adventures across the country, from skiing in Chamonix to bungee jumping off the Souleuvre Viaduct in Normandy. But before you gear up and go, it’s important to make sure you have the right coverage for the adventure activities you’re planning to do in France.

If you choose any of our base plans, your policy can provide coverage for specific adventure activities like snowboarding, kayaking, hiking, and horseback riding.

But if you want travel insurance for skiing in France or another adventure activity that isn’t eligible for coverage with our base plans — like paragliding in La Colmiane or skydiving in Pau — you may want to choose our Ultimate, Advantage, Essential, or Travel Med Go plan and pair it with our adventure activities upgrade.

Want to learn more about our adventure activities upgrade? Call our customer service team at 1-800-228-9792.

Here are a few ways you can see travel alerts that could affect your trip to France before and during your getaway:

  • If you’re a policyholder, our Travel On app can send you instant alerts about safety concerns nearby while you’re traveling — whether you're in Normandy in the north or Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur in the south.
  • We may list a world event that could affect your travel insurance coverage for your France trip on our travel alerts page.
  • Check the U.S. Department of State’s travel advisories website for potential safety concerns in France.

While you might feel more secure with the structure of an organized tour, travel insurance is a must-have for any trip to France. Why? It can give you an added layer of security for certain unexpected events — like a delayed tour bus or a personal medical emergency. Plus, your tour company may even require that you show proof of travel insurance before leaving on the trip.

Travel insurance for France trips can provide coverage for eligible costs that arise while you’re in Paris to take in the rolling vineyard-covered hills of Bordeaux, relax on the shores of Nice, or anywhere in between. This means your French adventure can get back to being as calm as a stroll through the lavender fields of Provence a whole lot faster.

Yes, you can! Our Ultimate, Advantage, Essential, and Travel Med Go plans let you add our rental car damage coverage as an optional upgrade. This means you can get help with unanticipated costs from vandalism, accidents, floods, and more.

Dreaming about cruising through French streets on a motorbike, moped, or quadbike? Keep in mind that our rental car damage upgrade doesn’t offer protection for certain types of vehicles.

If you’re planning to experience the beauty of France by cruise, you can bring our cruise travel insurance with you no matter which plan you choose.

Whether you get sick on board the ship or have a flight cancellation on the way to the port, we can help with eligible unforeseen expenses related to your cruise.

Life is unpredictable, and something could come up that means you need to call off your vacation plans entirely. With our plans, you can get coverage for canceling your trip to France for certain reasons listed in your policy.

Want to be able to cancel your trip for any reason at all? You can choose our Ultimate plan and add our cancel for any reason upgrade* to your policy. You can get up to 75% ($7,500 maximum) of your trip cost back as long as you cancel at least two days prior to your departure date.

Remember: To get cancel for any reason coverage, you must:

  • Insure all your prepaid nonrefundable trip expenses in your plan.
  • Have a trip cost equal to or less than $10,000 per person.
  • Purchase the upgrade 31 days or more before your departure date.
  • Buy the cancel for any reason upgrade with our Ultimate plan within 21 days of your initial payment for your trip.
  • Insure subsequent arrangements within 14 days of booking them.

*Cancel for any fortuitous reason for NY residents.

From France, you can easily get to many other countries within Europe to experience different cultures and see new sights all on the same vacation.

At Travelex, you can have coverage for your entire journey — not just in France — as long as you’re not visiting an OFAC-sanctioned country or one of our blocked destinations.

When getting your travel insurance quote, simply list your destination as Europe or the country where you’ll spend most of your trip. For example, if you want to visit France for five days and Italy for four days, you can list France as your destination.

Still have questions about coverage for your trip to France? You can reach our customer service team at 1-800-228-9792.

Yes, you can. Coverage for pre-existing medical conditions in France may be available if you qualify for our pre-existing condition exclusion waiver, which is offered with our Ultimate plan.

To be eligible, you’ll need to:

  • Purchase your plan within 21 days of your first trip payment.
  • Insure 100% of your prepaid, nonrefundable trip costs.
  • Be medically able to travel at the time of purchase.

This option can be especially valuable if you’re managing ongoing health needs while planning a trip to France — whether that’s sightseeing in Paris, wine tasting in Bordeaux, or skiing in the Alps.

The best time to buy travel insurance for France is shortly after you make your first trip payment — whether that’s booking flights to Paris, reserving a river cruise on the Rhône, or prepaying for a tour of the Loire Valley.

Buying early can make you eligible for time-sensitive benefits, such as a pre-existing condition exclusion waiver or trip cancellation for certain covered reasons. The sooner you purchase, the more protection you can have in place before your France trip begins.

Most U.S. health insurance plans provide little or no coverage outside the United States, which means you could be responsible for the full cost of medical treatment in France. Even routine care can be expensive for non-residents, and emergency services — such as hospitalization, medical evacuation, or ambulance transport — can add up quickly.

That’s why many travelers choose our travel insurance for France vacations with emergency medical benefits. Our comprehensive plans (Ultimate, Advantage, and Essential) can help cover eligible expenses for sudden illness or injury abroad, giving you added financial protection while traveling.
